‘We are cooks, not chefs’

School lunch cooks are one of those incredible unsung heros of communities and society. Often, women, and often migrants - they their heritage, care and connection to food to the children.

With the Western world facing a health crisis, school lunches are under the microscope. With NYC being a leader in an effort to go more plant based, sodium free, cooks are faced with changes, but their commitment to help ensure the kids eat healthy is indisputable.

As a team, they have worked together for over 11 years in the same school.

“We are like a family! We love to work and serve the children.”

Barbara is from Albania, Michaele is from the Dominican Republic, and Hatty is from Greece. They are enjoying a summer tea party organised by Wellness in the Schools where, for a change, they are being served.
